African Continent

Rift Valley type locations, Savanah landscapes, Bushveld locations, Lake Malawi & Lake Tanzania look-alikes. Wild animals, traditional African huts and backdrops, in fact you name a part of Africa you would like duplicated, and we can do it all in one province.

African locations spiderweb out from Durban - as close as half an hour in any direction, to three hours for the Inland Lake and Sand Dune locations.

English Countryside

Far from the Madding Crowd type countryside. Hedgerows, Rolling Green Hills, Trout Lakes, North Country-type Scenery, winding rivers, misty mornings. All of this, and hour and a half from the international airport in Durban.

Tropical Islands

Just an hour or two south of Durban, you will find a tropical paradise. Lush tropical vegetation, palm trees bending into small sea coves, rocky enclaves, white crested waves. Deserted beaches dotted with drift wood, wide river mouths. River gorges that Indiana Jones would go nutty for, Hanging vines, vervet monkeys, tropical forests, wild banana trees. Just think TROPICAL, and we'll dish it up for you.

Majestic Mountains

We have THE MOST SUPERB mountain range in South Africa. It is completely unique. Nowhere else in the world has mountains quite like ours. And as far as mountains go, they are very user-friendly. There are two helicopter services in the Drakensburg which will dump (gently, of course) photographers on the highest peaks so that one does not have to toil up a cliff face to get a good shot! Just think of all the rugged shots with breathtaking backdrops that are just waiting for photographers and cameramen alike!

Deserts

Admittedly we don't have huge deserts - Namibia is most certainly the destination for Deserts proper (see our neighbours category) - but we do have the highest Sand Dunes in the country. So if your shot is fairly tight, and does not involve any aerial photography, you could say that we have pretty neat deserts! Distance from Durban? About two hours on tarred roads and another hour on gravel roads. Very accessible actually.

Sugar Cane Fields

Twenty minutes from central Durban and you hit sugar cane fields. Sugar is something that KwaZulu-Natal does exceptionally well. Sugar mills, cane trucks, cane roads...there is a huge abundance. We even have an enormous Sugar Terminal which creates a most interesting location because there are quite literally mountains of sugar in this terminal.

Industrial Locations

Apart from the usual industrial warehouses and sites, we have an enormous coal terminal one and a half hours from Durban. En route to the terminal, trains at least 1.5 to 2 km long which take the coal from the mines in Northern KwaZulu-Natal to the terminal. Another interesting location to think about.

Urban Locations

There are areas in Durban which are exceptionally colonial. Victorian and Edwardian houses and warehouses are in plentiful supply and the nicest thing about these buildings is that it is fashionable right now to restore these old places so they are in pretty good nick. Pietermaritzburg, one hour from Durban, also has an abundance of Victorian architecture.

ORIENTAL locations are right here in Durban. Years and years ago when sugar cane was first planted in KwaZulu-Natal, South Indians were brought to South Africa as indentured labour to cut the sugar cane. Shortly after this, North Indians followed and set up trading outlets. The result? We have a very large Indian community in KwaZulu-Natal and consequently the rich Indian cultures are in evidence everywhere. Hindu Temples, Islamic Mosques, teaming oriental trading areas, markets, market gardens, traditional Indian weddings, traditional dance, traditional food. Suffice it to say that Durban has a very strong eastern flavour and is part of what sets us aside from the other provinces.

AFRICAN URBAN & RURAL: This is Africa so we take it for granted that we have African locations. The rural African locations are really super. A collection of thatched rondavels makes up the average Zulu homestead. Very, very interesting and certainly not found anywhere else in the world. Urban African locations are also good. Shebeens (beer halls), trading stores, art centres, graffiti. Come to KwaZulu-Natal to experience Africa.
